All three end in the same place: closed shapes, separated by colour, welded where they overlap. Where they differ is what you are starting with.

Say what you want and ask for it flat: solid fills, no outline, no gradient. Those three words are what turn a nice-looking graphic into something a blade can follow, so put them in the prompt rather than fixing it afterwards.

A logo, a sketch, a PNG you own. The vectoriser rebuilds it as shapes grouped by colour, which is exactly the structure Design Space wants — then it still needs welding and a weeding check.

For a name, a quote, a monogram. Set the type, flatten it to paths, and check the counters survived. Live text uploads as nothing at all, which is the single most common reason a word disappears on import.

Support is inconsistent. Apply the clip destructively before export.

Six steps, in this order.

Generate the artwork
Ask for flat vector, solid fills, no outline, no gradient. Every one of those words removes something a cutter would choke on.

Outline any strokes
Line work has to become filled shapes. A drawing that looks right on screen can be entirely invisible to a blade.

Weld the overlaps
Two shapes crossing each other means the blade cuts through the overlap twice. Merge them into one contour.

Separate by colour
One group per material. Design Space treats each layer as its own cut, so this is what determines your mats.

Check the small islands
Anything under a few millimetres cannot be weeded off the backing. Thicken it or remove it now.

Export and upload
Download the .svg and use Upload → Upload Image in Design Space. The layers come through as separate cuts.
The last mile

A good file can still fail here, almost always for the same reason — so this is the four-step version with that reason first.

Extract the ZIP first
Design Space cannot read inside an archive. Right-click and extract, then work from the .svg that comes out — this is the single most common stumble.

Upload, then Upload Image
On the left rail of the canvas. Drag the .svg onto the drop area or browse for it; a vector file skips the cut-line editing screen a PNG would put you through.

Add to Canvas
Pick it out of Recent Uploads. Your colour-separated groups arrive as separate layers in the panel on the right, ready to assign to mats.

Size before you cut
Resize on the canvas, not on the mat. Then check your thinnest element is still above the weeding threshold at the size you actually chose.
If the design lands as a single flat object, the file is fine and the colours are not: Design Space decides layers by fill, so two shapes sharing a colour are one cut. Go back, recolour by material, re-export.

These are the widths below which a piece tears as you weed it, not the widths the blade can technically cut. Treat them as practical minimums and test on an offcut before committing a full sheet.

- Can you make your own SVG files for Cricut?
- Yes, and it is usually faster than hunting through a freebie library for something close enough. Anything that produces closed, filled, colour-separated vector shapes will do — the three routes above cover generating artwork from a description, converting an image you already own, and outlining your own lettering.
- How do I convert an image to SVG for Cricut?
- Run it through the vectoriser, then treat the result as artwork rather than as a finished cut file: outline any strokes, weld the overlaps, and give each material its own colour. A converted image is cut-ready only after those three passes — that is true of every converter, not just this one.
- How do I upload an SVG to Cricut Design Space?
- Upload, then Upload Image, then drag the .svg in or browse for it. If it arrived as a ZIP, extract it first — Design Space will not read the archive. Select it from Recent Uploads and Add to Canvas, and your colour-separated groups arrive as separate layers.
- Will an SVG generated here upload to Cricut Design Space?
- Yes, as long as the artwork follows cut-file rules: closed filled paths, no strokes, no gradients, no live text. Design Space reads a standard SVG — most upload failures come from the artwork, not the format.
- Why does my design import as one flat layer?
- Design Space separates layers by colour. If every shape shares a fill, it sees one object. Give each material its own colour before exporting.
- What does welding do and why does it matter?
- Welding merges overlapping shapes into a single outline. Without it the blade cuts every internal boundary, which slices your design into pieces that fall apart when you weed it.
- How small can details be?
- As a rule of thumb, nothing thinner than about 3 mm in vinyl — smaller pieces tear when you weed them. Cardstock tolerates a little more; heat transfer vinyl a little less.
- Does this work with Cricut Joy?
- The file requirements are identical; the constraint is the material. Joy cuts a 4.5 inch working width, so scale the design to fit before you cut rather than discovering it on the mat — and be a little more generous with fine detail, since narrow strips are harder to weed off a narrow sheet.
- Does it work with Silhouette Studio?
- Yes. Silhouette's SVG import needs the paid Designer Edition, but the file requirements are the same: closed paths, no strokes, colour-separated layers.
- Is this a library of free SVG files to download?
- No — it makes files rather than stocking them, which is the honest distinction. If you want a ready-made design, the large craft marketplaces are the right place to look. If you want something specific, something you can change, or something nobody else is cutting, making your own takes a few minutes.
- Can I sell what I cut?
- Yes — royalty-free and unrestricted, covering finished physical products and the digital cut files themselves.
