Six steps

How to make a t-shirt design for printing.

In the order the constraints actually bite. Print size and colour count are both decided before the artwork is any good, and both are expensive to change afterwards.

  1. 01

    Describe the graphic, or start from one you have

    Generate from a prompt, or attach artwork up to 10 MB for the generator to work from. Either way you finish with paths and named groups rather than a flat picture — which is what every apparel process downstream is asking for.

  2. 02

    Set the artboard to the real print size

    11 × 14 inches for a standard adult front, 3.5 inches wide for a left chest. Judge the design at that size from the start; detail that reads on a laptop can vanish at 11 inches on cotton.

  3. 03

    Decide the colour count before the design is finished

    On screen print every colour is a screen and a setup fee. Four instead of seven is a pricing decision. Merge near-identical fills while it is still cheap to change your mind.

  4. 04

    Separate the colours onto named layers

    Give each colour its own group and name it in the code panel. Generated artwork already arrives grouped, so this is renaming and merging rather than rebuilding the file by hand.

  5. 05

    Outline the type and thicken the thin bits

    The printer does not have your font, so letterforms have to be paths. Then raise anything under 1 mm — it breaks up in screen print and disappears under a DTG underbase.

  6. 06

    Export the .svg and check it on both grounds

    Send the vector to a screen printer, vinyl cutter or embroidery digitiser. Preview it against white and black before you commit — a palette that assumes a white shirt dies on a black one.

Steps three and four are the ones a raster generator cannot offer. A flat image has no separable colours — a screen printer looking at a PNG is quoting you for a trace before they quote you for a shirt.

The method decides the artwork, not the other way round.

Screen printing

1 – 6 spot colours

What it needs

Flat separated colours, no gradients, no soft edges. Each colour is a physical screen, so every extra one costs money on every shirt.

Vector angle

Ideal. Each colour is already its own group, so separation is a matter of naming rather than tracing.

DTG (direct to garment)

Unlimited

What it needs

Full colour is fine. Watch the edges instead — DTG on dark garments needs a white underbase, and thin details disappear into it.

Vector angle

The master stays sharp at any size, but note the PNG here rasterises to 1024px on the long edge — not the 300 DPI a DTG shop wants. Send the .svg, or rasterise it at full size in a free editor.

Heat transfer vinyl

1 – 3 layers

What it needs

Cut paths, not fills. Every shape must be weedable — no islands so small you cannot lift them off the backing.

Vector angle

Required. The cutter follows paths directly, so this is the format the machine wants.

Embroidery

Thread colours

What it needs

Bold, simplified shapes with no detail under about 1.5 mm. A digitiser converts your file into stitch paths.

Vector angle

Best starting point. A clean vector gives the digitiser unambiguous contours to work from.

Print sizes

The placements a shop will quote on.

Set your artboard to the real dimensions and judge the design at that size. Everything about stroke weight and legibility follows from it.

Before you send it

Six things a printer will otherwise email you about.

  1. 01

    Design for the darkest garment

    Artwork that assumes a white shirt disappears on black. Check it against both grounds before you commit to a palette.

  2. 02

    Keep strokes above 1 mm

    Anything thinner breaks up in screen print and vanishes under a DTG underbase. Thicken it in the editor — one attribute, whole drawing.

  3. 03

    Count your colours early

    On screen print each colour is a screen and a setup fee. Deciding at four instead of seven is a pricing decision, not an aesthetic one.

  4. 04

    Outline all type

    The printer does not have your font. Convert letterforms to paths so what they open is what you drew.

  5. 05

    Mind the seams and collar

    A print that crosses a seam distorts. Keep the artwork inside the flat panel of the garment.

  6. 06

    Proof at true size

    Set the artboard to the real print dimensions. Detail that reads on a laptop can be invisible at 11 inches on cotton.

Is the t-shirt design generator free?
A free account starts with a generation credit and no card, which is enough to produce a design and judge the output. Editing, recolouring, separating and exporting cost nothing after that — credits are spent on generation only — and nothing comes back watermarked.
What resolution should a t-shirt design be?
300 DPI at the printed size, which for a standard 11 × 14 inch front print means roughly 3300 × 4200 pixels. That is a raster requirement — a vector file has no resolution to get wrong, which is why sending the .svg sidesteps the question entirely where the process accepts one.
Can I export a 300 DPI PNG for print-on-demand?
Not from here, and it is worth being blunt about it: PNG export rasterises to 1024px on the long edge, well short of what Printify or Printful want. Download the .svg and rasterise it at full size in a free editor like Inkscape, which takes a minute and gives you exactly the pixel dimensions the platform asks for.
Do you generate t-shirt mockups?
No. There is no mockup renderer here — nothing that drops your graphic onto a photographed shirt for a product listing. Placeit and Pacdora exist for that and do it well. What you get here is the artwork itself, as vector.
What file does a print shop want?
Vector — SVG, PDF, AI or EPS — with type outlined and colours separated onto named layers. If they ask for raster, give them 300 DPI at the final print size, which you can export from the same vector source.
How do I separate colours for screen printing?
Group each colour into its own named layer in the editor. Because generated artwork already arrives grouped, this is usually renaming and merging rather than rebuilding the file.
Can I use gradients?
On DTG, yes. On screen printing, a gradient has to be simulated with halftone dots, which most shops charge extra for — flat colour is the safe default for apparel.
What size should the artwork be?
Design at the real print size, typically 11 × 14 inches for a standard adult front print. Vector means resizing for youth or oversized runs costs nothing.
Can I sell shirts with these designs?
Yes — royalty-free, worldwide, no attribution, including print-on-demand storefronts, Etsy and wholesale runs.
Does print-on-demand accept SVG?
Usually not — most platforms want a transparent PNG at 300 DPI. Keep the .svg as your master and rasterise a copy at the dimensions each platform asks for. The advantage of holding the vector is that the next size, the next colourway and the next print process all come from it without a redraw.
